    Understanding Water Sports "Skier Down" Flags

    Overview

    A water sports "skier down" flag is a brightly colored safety device, usually orange or red, that measures at least 12x12 inches or larger. It is required in many states and serves to 

    alert other boaters when a skier, wakeboarder, or tuber is in the water. Displaying this flag signals to nearby vessels that they should reduce speed and keep their distance. Importantly, the flag is shown only when someone is in the water, not while they are being towed. These flags can be attached to the boat using clamps or suction cups, making them easy to display and remove as needed. Their primary function is to enhance safety on the water by ensuring that other boaters are aware of and can avoid people in the water.

    Legal Requirements

    • Many states—including Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, and Washington—legally require the use of these flags when towing water sports participants.
